The Estimated Duration Feature on edtake
The estimated duration allows you to quickly visualize the average time needed to go through a module or sequence on edtake. It is automatically calculated based on the content you add, but you can also adjust it manually if needed. Indicating a realistic duration is essential to:
- Set the right expectations for your learners
- Structure your learning paths based on engagement time
- Simplify logistical planning
Where can you find it?
The estimated duration is displayed in two areas of your workspace:
- At the module level: in the top-left corner, next to the module version. It reflects the total duration of all sequences within the module.
- At the sequence level: also in the top-left corner, next to the sequence type. It represents only the duration of that specific sequence.
How is it calculated automatically?
The duration is estimated based on a set of rules specific to each content type. Here are the principles used for automatic calculation:
- Text: 200 words = 1 minute
→ This is based on an average reading speed. - Image: 3 seconds per image
→ The system assumes a simple image takes about 3 seconds to be understood. - Activity / Exercise: duration multiplied by a reflection factor of 2.5x
→ Interactive blocks that require a response are considered longer to complete, to account for reading, comprehension, and thinking time. - Video: actual duration is used
→ Whether the video is uploaded from your computer, embedded via a link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), or sourced from Inokufu, edtake automatically retrieves its exact length and includes it in the total. This ensures an accurate estimate of the required viewing time.
Each block is timed individually, and all durations are then summed to provide a total estimate at both the sequence and module levels.
